<p><br></p><p dir="ltr">Addressing complex and evolving problems demands a novel approach to thinking that challenges underlying assumptions and encourages innovative solutions. This approach necessitates integrating critical design thinking, which combines both convergent and divergent thought processes to enhance problem-solving capabilities in design innovation. By structuring design innovation frameworks to explicitly incorporate critical analysis, students can effectively navigate complex issues and develop creative solutions that are contextually relevant. This method emphasises the importance of asking strategic questions, which not only help redefine prob-lems but also guide evaluative thinking to ensure optimal outcomes. The blended model of Critical Design Thinking (CDT) proposed in our framework is designed to support this process, particularly in fostering adaptable mindsets that can address real-world challenges. Early results from pilot studies suggest that integrating these thinking modes promotes critical competence and creative confidence among students. The use of critical questioning within this model has been instrumental in reframing how problems are perceived and addressed, thus supporting effective solution development.</p>
