Stroke is one of the leading causes of chronic disability, often leading to balance disorders, gait deficits and an increased risk of falls. Patients with stroke who are more prone to falling frequently experience disequilibrium scenarios where they almost fall but manage to prevent it (near falls). Learning about the perceived ability of one’s reactive balance recovery to arrest a fall is useful because this self-reported confidence can be evaluated against balance performance to identify any potential discrepancy and used for rehabilitation planning. The Balance Recovery Confidence (BRC) scale was developed recently for this purpose. However, its psychometric properties were evaluated with community-dwelling older adults and have not been validated in patients with stroke.
