Power factor correction (PFC) operation, high-density, low-cost, and high-efficiency are the prime factors while designing an electric vehicle (EV) battery charger for a grid-to-vehicle (G2V) charging system. Power electronic circuit topology plays a cardinal role in designing an ac-to-de power conversion system with the above-mentioned features for EV charging applications. This article proposes and investigates a single-stage bidirectional current-fed push-pull topology with bidirectional switches on the AC side and a full-bridge on the DC side via a high-frequency transformer (HFT). The proposed configuration achieves zero current switching (ZCS) of the AC-side switches and zero-current turn-on for the DC-side switches. The topology is snubber-less and employs simple yet effective fixed-frequency pulse-width modulation. This article describes a novel modulation strategy for a promising soft-switching method during all modes of operation with bidirectional power flow. The operation, analysis, and design of the proposed topology are explained. Simulation results using PSIM 11.04 software and experimental results of the 1.5 kVA have been formulated closely match with the theoretical analysis and validate the operation of the proposed EV charger.
