As workplace training evolves, the adoption of advanced technologies such as extended reality (XR), Generative AI, gaming, and e-learning has become increasingly prevalent. However, the effectiveness of these technologies depends not only on their capabilities but also on how they are applied. A common pitfall in technology adoption is the implementation of emerging tools as an end in itself to justify their high costs rather than as a means to enhance training effectiveness. This blunt approach often leads to modifying the training requirements to fit the technology rather than the clinical selection and application of technology to meet training needs. This presentation shares the smart application of technology for workplace training at SBS Transit Rail. The presentation will use examples of implemented solutions at the workplace to highlight the clinical approach taken to integrate technology based on specific training objectives in a learner-centric manner, rather than indiscriminate adoption. This ensures that technological solutions served to enhance training effectiveness in an efficient and purposeful manner. Key examples on the use of technology at SBS Transit Rail include: 1. The use of Extended Reality (XR) for Immersive Learning. Virtual, augmented, and mixed reality offer highly immersive environments that enhance experiential learning. When applied strategically, XR can simulate high-risk or complex scenarios, allowing learners to develop skills safely and efficiently. SBS Transit Rail considered how XR is used based on the training complexity, engagement levels, and cost-effectiveness. 2. The use of Generative AI for Personalized and Scalable Training. AI-powered tools can generate adaptive learning materials, real-time feedback, and conversational simulations, making training more responsive to individual learning needs. SBS Transit Rail considered how Generative AI is applied to enhance engagement and scale training while ensuring the content accuracy. 3. Gamification for Active Learning. Game-based training improves motivation and knowledge retention. However, gamification should not be a superficial addition but should align with learning objectives. SBS Transit Rail considered the criteria for when gaming elements, such as challenges, rewards, and interactive scenario-based gameplay, can effectively drive behavioral and cognitive outcomes. By adopting this structured approach, SBS Transit Rail strives to maximize the benefits of technology while ensuring that training programs remain aligned with their core objectives.
