As the population ages, total hip arthroplasties for hip osteoarthritis and fractures will increase. Acetabular cup osteolysis is one of the most common complications of this surgery, and may be caused by a lack of initial stability and poor osseointegration. Supplemental screw fixation may lead to greater initial stability but controversy remains over the optimal cup design and screw configuration.

This study aims to determine if a cluster- or multi-hole screw configuration is associated with increased implant stability via patient-specific finite element analysis on acetabular cups with the two configurations.
